Standing at only five feet, she’s quite small and also very slim. While she is skinny, she does have quite a bit of toned muscle that you really wouldn’t expect by looking at her. She makes it a point to keep herself fit though. The most noticeable thing about Kim Lan is her hair. Not because of its color, her hair is just plain black. However it is very, very long. Kim Lan’s hair reaches past her ankles, but she doesn’t just let it drag around. No, she keeps it up in a number of complicated styles she’s learned over the years to keep it out of the way. That and it looks pretty. Her eyes are a deep brown color and her skin is relatively pale, but she does tan if she’s out in the sun for any period of time. As far as clothing goes, Kim Lan is very simply dressed for the most part. She’s usually seen wearing an ao dai, partly because it’s comfortable and partly to show her love for her home country of Vetnam. Kim Lan doesn’t have any colors she particularly hates so you’ll see her in a wide array of them, possibly with a few patterns thrown in if she’s feeling fancy. She normally wears some form of flat shoes on her feet, but she’ll slip on a pair of heels for special occasions and whatnot. Jewelry isn’t really her thing, but she usually is seen wearing earrings. In addition, Kim Lan also wears contacts on a day to day basis for she is very near sighted. PERSONALITY Kim Lan is a shining example of a kind and encouraging teacher. She wants the absolute best for her students and will go to great lengths to help them. She genuinely wants them to succeed and does her best as a teacher to make that happen. If they need extra tutoring, Kim Lan is happy to stay after class with them and go over whatever is confusing them. If they walk in looking like five miles of bad road she’ll send them straight to the nurse or just let them sleep under her desk or in the back of the classroom. If a student is ill, she often checks up on them just to see how they’re doing, often bringing by loads of food as she thinks it’s the solution to every problem. The kindness she shows her students translates right into her everyday life. Kim Lan always seems to be smiling and in a cheerful mood. She’d more than willing to help anyone, be it a friend or a complete stranger she’s run into on the street. She’s a shoulder to cry on, she’s the friend who welcomes you into her home when times are tough, and she never asks anything in return. Of course her faith in people’s ability to be genuinely good has its downsides. While not the definition of gullible, Kim Lan is a bit easy to take advantage of with her willingness to help. Her trusting nature has gotten her into a few sticky situations over the years, but never anything she couldn’t handle. While always encouraging of her students and friends, Kim Ln does have a bad habit to taking criticism very well. Even if she knows it’s aimed at something she could improve on, she generally takes it way too personally, even if she knows she shouldn’t. She’ll general avoid anyone she knows is critical o her or thinks she could do better because of this, immature as it is. In addition, she believes any idea of hers is a good idea. Ever the optimist, she’s usually a bit too proud of herself whenever she thinks up a solution to a problem. Most praise directed towards Kim Lan is met by phrases like “I know!” or “Of course, it is me after all!”. She thinks very highly of herself and can be quite vain at times. Lastly is she literally has no way of dealing well with any kind of emotional upset. Whether it’s anger or sadness, Kim Lan always thinks it best to smother her sorrows in food. Most bad days end with her cooking up comfort food or going out and buying the unhealthiest thing she can think of in terms of nourishment. She sees absolutely nothing wrong with this and sees it as her solution to everything and anything that goes wrong. EXTRAS Likes: + Food + Sunshine + Dancing + Shopping + Styling her hair Dislikes: - An Empty Refrigerator - Storms - Snakes - Uncaring people - Pointless violence Talents: + Cooking – What with her bad habit of eating any negative feelings she comes into contact with, Kim Lan is quite the cook. This also stems from her having two younger siblings that she often had to look after when they were younger and their parents weren’t home. If you give her a recipe, she can make it. In addition she makes the best pho you’ve ever tasted. + Dancing – Kim Lan discovered her passion for dancing when she started it up as a way to become closer with her mother. With her mother travelling all over to dance, it was a way for them to bond and she soon found that she loved it. Beginning mainly with folk dances from Vietnam, Kim Lan eventually moved on to ballroom dances and studied a bit of ballet as well. Don’t be surprised if you see her dancing through the halls or twirling form one side of the room to the other. + Styling Hair – Considering Kim Lan isn’t exactly in a position where she can cut her hair, and given how long it is, she’s learned how to expertly get it into some pretty badass up-do’s. She’s figured out how to get her hair to do just about anything she pleases. IF you need your hair don for a special occasion, Kim Lan would probably be a good person to talk to. COMBAT Strengths: + Flexible + Quick Reflexes + High Stamina Weaknesses: - Physically Weaker - Low Endurance - Poor Eyesight Power Strengths: + Can use her hair to grab and throw things within six feet of her + Can use her hair to strangle anyone within range + Her hair is unusually resilient and difficult to cut with anything other than a razor blade Power Weaknesses: - Cut her hair and her powers are pretty much useless - Her attacks are limited to six feet as that is how long her hair is - If her hair tangles it limits her range or inhibits her entirely until she can untangle it Power: Animated Hair – Kim Lan powers are rooted in her hair. Having grown it out to where it’s longer than she is tall, she can only use her abilities with it within six feet. She’ll use it to pick up and throw things, slap people with it, and generally use it to be sassy. In a fighting situation, her main thing is to get within range of her enemy and try to strangle them with it. Of course, she can only do this when it isn’t kept up, and she keeps it up most of the time to keep her hair from dragging along the ground behind her. The downside is that if she or someone else happens to cut her hair, Kim Lan’s powers are pretty harmless. HISTORY Kim Lan Tran was born in Da Lat, Vietnam to Linh Hoa and Quang Thanh on the morning of August 25th. She would be the first of three sisters with An Hoa being born two years later and Thu Thi being born five years later. Early on, Kim Lan had the task of helping take care of her sisters. Her mother was a professional dancer and travelled all over the world, only coming home for birthdays and specific holidays. Her father travelled with her as he was a musician. Kim Lan didn’t mind, and took to the role of big sister perfectly. She did laundry, learned to cook early from their grandmother, and always made sure An Hoa and Thu Thi got to school and bed on time. While she did sometimes feel a bit isolated from her parents, Kim Lan merely made sure to spend lots of time with them whenever they would travel back to Da Lat to visit them. When Kim Lan was only eight years old, her grandmother noticed something strange. She noticed that her granddaughter needed a haircut, but something wasn’t quite right. She couldn’t get the scissors to cut Kim Lan’s hair, the metal wasn’t strong enough somehow. Perplexed, she merely decided to let well enough alone. In the meantime, Kim Lan’s sisters also began to take notice in strange things about their big sister. Ao Hoa would glance over at her sister doing her homework and notice the ends of her hair tapping against her shoulders, like a cat would tap its tail on the floor almost. When she mentioned it to Kim Lan it abruptly stopped. Curious, the oldest of the Tran sisters tried to mimic the behavior her sister had described. Sure enough, if she focused enough her hair began to move. Utterly flabbergasted, they ran to their grandmother to ask her what was happening. Realizing Kim Lan had inherited a family trait, the old woman merely laughed and brought out the family tree and a few portraits. According to her, Kim Lan was not the first to have the power of animated hair in their family. The girls were relieved if a bit perplexed and Kim Lan began to experiment with her powers by picking things up and trying to throw them, mainly at Thu Thi whenever she would pester her. As she got older and Kim Lan let her hair grow, her parents began wondering whether or not to send their daughter away to Alinari Academy. It didn’t seem like a bad idea, but they were worried about leaving An Hoa and Thu Thi to their own devices. Thinking up a compromise, it was decided that their father would stay home with his younger daughters so that Kim Lan would be able to go and learn amongst others of her kind. Delighted at the possibility of being able to travel, Kim Lan leapt at the chance and was soon off to Alinari Academy. Being her kind and trusting self, she soon made many friends and kept generally good grades, excelling most in Home Ec due to her skills she picked up from taking care of her sisters. After many lovely years at Alinari Academy, Kim Lan graduated. After graduating, she returned to Vietnam for a while, practicing dance with her sisters and mother like when they were younger. Eventually she returned to Italy, though, and there was where she met Ivan Volkov. Kim Lan and Ivan fell hopelessly in love over the course of a year and when she was twenty, they married. For the first year, the two returned to Vietnam to visit with her family and so Kim Lan could show Ivan where she came from. During that year, the newlyweds found out they were expecting and nine months later they welcome their daughter Nina into the world. Everything was going perfectly for their growing family, which of course is why it couldn’t last. Ivan was a soldier and with the war still raging in Russia, he was called back only a year later. Kim Lan bid her beloved husband goodbye and helped a then one year old Nina wave to her father as they watched him go. Six months later, Kim Lan would receive word that Ivan had been killed in combat and her world suddenly came crashing down around her. She’d known he was a soldier when she married him, but never did she think she would lose him. For months, Kim Lan was inconsolable and her sisters did their best to help her. They took her in and helped care for little Nina and tried their best to make their sister not feel quite so miserable. After almost a year and a half of mourning, Kim Lan decided enough as enough. Throwing herself into her mother’s dance company as a distraction, she took part in as many shows as she could to keep herself from falling back into a depression. It worked. But the war ending only two years after his death did reopen her wounds and for a while, Kim Lan was once again quite the somber individual. However this was to change. Out of the blue would arrive a letter from Alinari Academy, inquiring as to whether or not she would be interested in a teacher job. Seeing it as an opportunity to start anew, Kim Lan packed her bags and she and Nina, now five years old, were off to Italy. It was just what she needed. Teaching put a skip back in her step, and being able to be of help to young empowered on their road to success made Kim Lan feel happier than she had in years.
